Miao Ethnic Tranditional Village

Miao Ethnic Tranditional Village

Longtang Village, situated in the picturesque Leishan County, Qiandongnan, Guizhou, is a sight to behold. The terraced tea mountains, draped in a veil of mist, and the stilted wooden houses perched on cliffs, make for a breathtaking view. The community of Longtang village is home to generations of humble and genuine Miao people, who lead a life that is simple, close to nature, and imbued with a prosperous culture.

What struck me the most about this village was the impressive drive and autonomy demonstrated by its female residents in pursuing entrepreneurial ventures locally. In contrast to the often-oppressive patriarchal norms found in some other Chinese agricultural communities, the women here show remarkable solidarity, joyfulness, and mutual support. They possess a more optimistic and proactive disposition, and readily express themselves, empowering one another and finding purpose and fulfillment in their daily lives.

Despite the language barrier, I could see the joy on her face when I attempted to convey that she was beautiful. This woman, who had spent her entire life in a remote mountain village, was about 80 years old and had likely not received many compliments in her life. Yet, she seemed to understand the sentiment and responded with an effusive hug after the last photo was taken. It moved me as a touching moment, especially since displays of physical affection from Chinese elders are often reserved and measured.
